Injuries piling up along with losses

Riding a five game losing skid and scuffling worse than a scolded adolescent, the reeling Red Sox got a double dose of bad news today before they could even think about facing the Texas Rangers tonight.

Starting outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Cameron were both placed on the disabled list with significant abdominal injuries that could force them to miss more than the requisite 15 days a DL stint will require.

PawSox outfielders Darnell McDonald and Josh Reddick will be called up to replace them on the roster.

Talk about adding injuries to insults.

Ellsbury, who has been sidelined since suffering a ribcage injury after a collision with Adrian Beltre in Kansas City on April 11th, had hoped to return to the lineup following a few days of rest & rehab. But when his shortness of breath and pain persisted a week later, the Sox decided to DL their offensive catalyst, retroactive to the 12th; he’s eligible to come back on the 27th.

Meanwhile Cameron, whose arrival in Boston displaced Ellsy in centerfield this season, had been plagued by a groin injury in spring training and then kidney stones for the past week or so. Turns out the ailments were all related to a sports hernia, requiring the 37-year-old outfielder to be disabled as well.

Cameron might miss significantly more than 15 days, especially if surgery is required. The Globe is reporting that he will wait about a week before determining a course of action.

With Bill Hall struggling both at the plate (.091) and in the field (2 errors in 4 games), the losses of  two starting outfielders severely hampers a club that is already suffering from lack of offense and lackadaisical defense. Jeremy Hermida, who has performed well so far this year, will be able to provide some relief, but no one can expect the two young OFs to be a cure for what ails this team.

But Boston has no choice but to play the hand that has been dealt them. A weak team just got weaker. And a losing streak that has spawned Mass hysteria may not end anytime soon.
